Job Description

The CNC Grinder Operator is responsible for setting up and operating CNC grinding machines to perform precise machining operations on various materials, including carbide and steel. The role involves frequent changeovers for custom orders and maximizing production efficiency through simultaneous operation of multiple machines.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Review work assignments and verify accuracy regarding count, type, and sequence.
  • Set up machines following established procedures, including selecting grind wheels, bushings, collets, and programs; input tool and setup values; grind and inspect the first piece, and make necessary adjustments.
  • Dress and form abrasive wheels using standard dressing devices. Mount and secure tools in the machine. Set and adjust wheel spindle speeds, feed rates, and travel stops.
  • Operate equipment in auto-cycle mode whenever possible, continuously inspecting finished products for correct dimensions.
  • Set up and operate multiple machines simultaneously, as appropriate.
  • Enter all production information into the data collection system.
  • Monitor equipment performance, report issues, and request maintenance to prevent downtime and damage.
  • Perform required documentation procedures for all jobs.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area at all times.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education:

  • CNC Certificate with a focus on machine tool operation or three to five years of relevant experience/training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.

Skills/Experience:

  • Previous experience with basic machine operation or related technical training.
  • At least one year of experience in machine setup and operation, with an emphasis on grinding principles.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow written instructions and shop drawings.
  • Above-average math skills, including the ability to calculate and adjust machine settings. Proficiency in trigonometry is beneficial.
  • Proficiency in using precision measuring and testing equipment.
  • Broad knowledge of cutting tool design and universal grinding procedures using multi-axis CNC equipment.
  • Computer literacy, with the ability to enter programs and follow directions.
